ABC's "Nightline" program recently profiled an increasingly popular use of psychiatric medications: treating behavioral problems in pets. The show consulted Dr. Nicholas Dodman, the veterinarian who founded the Animal Behavior Center at Tufts University.
As veterinary pharmaceutical sales representatives and veterinarians can attest, Americans spent $7 billion on pet medication in 2011, representing a 35% sales increase over the past four years. Pet medication sales continue to be a major source of revenue for the pharmaceutical and veterinary communities.
