Animal Health For Sale by Pfizer

The Wall Street Journal reports that Pfizer's animal health division may be sold to a rival pharmaceutical company for as much as $20 billion. This news may be of interest to pharmaceutical sales reps, small animal veterinarians, large animal veterinarians, and other animal health industry professionals.

The German firm Bayer factors as a strong prospect for taking over Pfizer's animal health interests; Bayer is best known for its Advantage flea and tick prevention products. A prior bid by the Novartis firm (reportedly in the range of $16 billion) was rejected. Pfizer may also consider keeping the animal health unit to create a spinoff company.

Pfizer's veterinary revenue, the largest in the animal health industry, surged an additional 17 percent in 2011 to reach a sales volume of $4.18 billion.
