Animal control officials are reminding pet owners to keep animals indoors during July 4th celebrations. Animal shelters and rescue groups see as much as a 30 percent spike in lost pets from July 4 through July 6 each year. Many animals are startled by the loud noises produced by fireworks, and they may flee the area if they can find a path of escape.
Owners are reminded to keep pet areas secure, keep identification tags on pets (especially if they are not microchipped), and leave the radio or television on to muffle the sounds of the celebrations outdoors.
