A study at the University of Melbourne has shown that the viruses used in two different poultry vaccines have combined outside of the laboratory setting to form new a new strain of infectious disease. This development is of great concern to the veterinary industry, particularly the segment concerned with treating animals used in poultry farming and egg farming.
The risk of such recombination outside of the lab setting was previously thought to be quite low, but the recent development of the new strain of infectious laryngotracheitis (a disease with worldwide impact and a 20% mortality rate) has raised concerns that this is becoming more prevalent.
