Kroger pharmacies nationwide are now offering pet prescriptions alongside their traditional inventory. Kroger is even including a number of pet products in the popular $4 generic drug program in an effort to beat the prices offered by local veterinarians and online suppliers.
Large retailer Target also offers pet medications in its pharmacies. Target's PetRX program offers pet drugs in 24 states, with products in stock at over 670 individual stores.
It would appear that the days of veterinarians turning a healthy profit from prescriptions may be numbered as more competitors enter the market. These developments could also have an impact on pharmaceutical sales representatives who have traditionally marketed products to veterinary clinics.
